What Machines Do You Need To Make Socks?

Aug 27, 2023|

Socks are essential items of clothing that keep our feet warm, comfortable, and protected. They come in various sizes, shapes, colors, and designs, and can be made from different materials, such as cotton, wool, nylon, polyester, etc. But how are socks made? What machines do you need to make socks?

There are two main methods of making socks: sewing and knitting. Sewing involves cutting and stitching pieces of fabric together to form a sock shape, while knitting involves creating loops of yarn that are woven together to form a seamless tube. Both methods require different machines and tools to produce socks.

Sewing Machines for Socks

If you want to make socks by sewing, you will need a sewing machine that can handle stretchy fabric. You will also need a pattern, scissors, pins, needles, thread, and elastic. Here are the basic steps of making socks by sewing:

- Cut out the fabric pieces according to the pattern. You will need two pieces for each sock: one for the foot and one for the leg.
- Pin the fabric pieces together with right sides facing each other. Sew along the edges with a zigzag stitch or a stretch stitch, leaving an opening at the heel and the toe.
- Turn the sock right side out and sew the heel and toe openings closed with a whipstitch or a ladder stitch.
- Fold over the top edge of the sock and sew an elastic band inside to create a cuff.
- Repeat the steps for the other sock.

Knitting Machines for Socks

If you want to make socks by knitting, you will need a knitting machine that can knit tubes of fabric in the round. You will also need yarn, a yarn feeder, a tension device, and a latch tool. There are different types of knitting machines that can knit socks, such as circular sock machines (CSMs), flatbed knitting machines, double-bed knitting machines, or electronic knitting machines. Here are the basic steps of making socks by knitting:

- Set up the knitting machine according to the instructions and attach the yarn feeder and the tension device.
- Cast on the required number of stitches on the needles and start knitting in the round with a plain or ribbed stitch until you reach the desired length for the leg.
- Knit a short-row heel by decreasing and increasing stitches on one side of the machine until you form a cup shape.
- Knit in the round again until you reach the desired length for the foot.
- Knit a short-row toe by decreasing stitches on both sides of the machine until you have a few stitches left.
- Cut off the yarn and use a latch tool to close the toe opening by pulling each stitch through the next one until you reach the end.
- Repeat the steps for the other sock.
